A gunman shot dead 10 people and wounded three others at a grocery store in Buffalo, police said.
According to the AP, police arrested 18-year-old Payton Gendron in connection with the shooting. On Saturday night, he will be charged with first-degree murder.
Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown told reporters at a news conference on Saturday: “The man responsible for today’s horrific tragedy is in custody. Officials refused to identify the suspect during a news conference, saying they wanted to wait until his sentencing.
According to Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia, a “heavily armed” shooter opened fire in the parking lot of Tops Market on Jefferson Avenue around 2:30 p.m. EST. It all started when he entered the store and started firing at the security guard, who is a retired police officer.
Later, according to reports, he allegedly carried a gun to his neck, but police were able to arrest him.
Erie County Sheriff John Garcia called the incident “pure evil.” “It’s a racially motivated hate crime,” the police officer said.
Officials say the gunman live-streamed the incident using a camera in his helmet. The report claims that he published an online manifesto promoting anti-Semitic ideas and supporting the “white replacement” conspiracy.
He claims in his manifesto that he grew up in Southern Tire, New York, with his parents and two brothers and never left the area. Also, he said that he was present at Sunny Broom at that time.
“The shooter traveled for hours outside the community to commit this crime against the people of Buffalo,” Brown said.
Attorney Trini Ross said the shots would be examined as hate crimes and as cases of domestic violent extremism by the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security. Eleven of the 13 dead were African Americans, officials said.
Police at the scene described the incident.
I feel like I’m in a horror movie, but it’s all true. “It’s Armageddon,” said a police officer quoted in the Buffalo News. That feeling of helplessness is obvious.
Investigators “believe the gunman was broadcasting the shooting through a camera attached to his helmet,” an official said, according to the Associated Press. According to the source, the surveillance video showed a gunman wearing a military uniform pulling a rifle from the front seat of the store to the front of the store before firing on the spectators in the parking lot while getting out of the car.
An official said the video showed the gunman entering the supermarket and shooting several others. According to sources, one of the dead was a police officer who had just retired and was working as a business security guard.
Shonell Harris, an operations manager at Tops, said he heard gunshots and ran frantically through the store, according to Buffalo News, which had more reporting at the scene, and fell several times before retreating. He saw the shooter, a white man in disguise, and described him as a shooter. “She looks like she’s in the military.” Harris made sure he heard 70 shots.
Authorities are investigating whether the shooter was live-streamed from the site, according to the man.
According to two sources, the gunman was taken into custody and transferred to a police vehicle at the scene.
The assassin was protected from the scene by body armor and a high-quality military helmet.
