California Data Violations Reveals All Concealed Weapons Carrying Permit Information
According to the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office, the names, residences, and license types of each California Concealed Weapons (CCW) permit holder were released as a result of data breaches experienced by the State Department of Justice.
The California State Sheriff’s Association has notified the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office of data breaches affecting anyone allowed to carry concealed weapons, according to officials, following the release of the state’s 2022 Firearms Dashboard portal on Monday. State officials at the time said it had increased “transparency and information sharing for gun-related data.”
According to representatives of the Sheriff’s Office, the information provided includes the names, ages, addresses, Criminal Identification Index (CII) numbers and type of licenses of CCW holders (Standard, Judicial, Reserve and Custodial). Each CCW holder in the state was listed in the data.
Fresno County officials have claimed that the state blocked access to the website after the information was released, but there are concerns that the material was copied and is still being shared on social media and other websites. It is unknown at this time what he will do after leaving the post.
According to authorities, the state attorney general’s office is trying to measure the breach and plans to speak to CCW holders separately to inform them of the matter.
According to the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office, anyone who believes their identity has been compromised as a result of a data breach is being asked to report online.
The California Department of Justice said in a statement that “any unauthorized sharing of personal information is unacceptable” and that it was looking into possible breaches of personal data related to the DOJ Firearms Dashboard.
